An entertaining drama with comic touches - something like a pilot for a series on Mrs Pollifax.ġ. It has a post-fall of the Soviet Union setting with nuclear devices available to rogue buyers.
This is PG-rated spy stories - with some wry comments about the efficiency and intelligence of CIA operatives as well as highlighting the dangers of international terrorism. And, as played by Angela Lansbury, the doings of Mrs Pollifax as a spy seem almost credible. The locations are attractive, the dialogue humorous. A widow, she volunteers to be a CIA spy and finds adventures in Marrakesh, Paris and Geneva. The film was directed by her son, Anthony Shaw, responsible for so many episodes of Murder, She Wrote.Īt 73, Angela Lansbury is quite sprightly. After a long film career, a successful television career, especially as Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote, Angela Lansbury follows in Rosalind Russell's footsteps and is a very lively Mrs Pollifax. People for that agency are recruited in all kinds of ways, but I doubt they just take people who ask to work. Their Albanian prison is in the hands of a "Red" Chinese general Albert Paulsen with his second being Albanian Nehemiah Persoff. But through a series of mixups and missed signals Russell whose assignment was in Mexico is whisked off to Albania where she's held prisoner with professional spy Darren McGavin. As guileless as Russell is Dana Elcar decides maybe she will do at least as a courier. With the help of her US Senator she gets an introduction to a top CIA man and says she wants to become Mrs. For her last big screen release she chose a film that was about a middle aged woman who now that her kids are grown and she's a widow decides that espionage is the career for her. Like so many of her contemporaries Rosalind Russell was finding it difficult to get work without having to resort to the horror genre.
